Is the NHS Dysfunctional or Simply Non Existent?

Hello Friends!

I am in total disbelief. Furious doesn't even begin to cover it.

I last saw my {so called} Parkinson's specialist in October 2023. Whether or not I should call him a specialist is a moot point for reasons I won't go into right now.

What I will go into is this.

I am supposed to see a specialist at least every six months. Over the past twelve months I have had one postponed appointment after another. After the October 2023 appointment, my next appointment was scheduled for May 2024. Shortly before it was due, I received a letter that rescheduled it to June. Within a few weeks, the June appointment was rescheduled to October 2024. Then in September 2024 I received notification that the October appointment was rescheduled to February 2025. A letter has just arrived to tell me that the February 2025 appointment is cancelled and now the responsibility is upon me to contact them if I wish to reschedule.

Our NHS is beyond broken. It is non existent. There are no words. I have yet to decide what I will do next. I will take the weekend to consider my options, if I actually have options to consider.

Until next time
Stay safe, stay well
Debbie xx

    1. I wonder if it will ever be repaired and what it's future holds.

  3. I read your FB post too. This is just beyond. Your illness is not going to go away. How can they justify cancellation after cancellation? I hope that your GP can do something to help with this.

    1. hopefully I'll get some answers soon, but right now the Parkinson's Nurses are all out of the office until next week. GP? What GP?

  5. Here in New Zealand our health service is modelled on the English NHS and is equallly as dysfunctional. While working I saved hard in a separate account to keep my private medical insurance for as long as possible. I don’t know how long that nest egg will last with rising premiums but currently I’m very grateful for it, although my pacemaker is cared for completely under NHS. It’s all a worry as we age isn’t it! Margaret from New Zealand

    1. It seems those of us who have paid into our various systems in preparation for retirement/old age/illness etc are the ones not benefiting from the system.

  6. I am so sorry to read this.
However, am I surprised? Well no, has to be the answer! (and that is so sad)
We have a family member who like you has had his appointment changed then cancelled five times!!! He is still doubtful that the current one scheduled will actually go ahead. The NHS at times can still be excellent but it is in desperate need of an overhaul and this will not happen overnight.
I sincerely hope your GP may be able to help you.

Sending my good wishes to you.
Stay warm in this current cold spell, and stay safe as Storm Bert comes through over the weekend.

    All the best Jan

    1. I am not surprised either. To think what we've just gone through with losing our surgery too! Right now, I don't even know who my GP is!
Hatches battened in preparedness for Bert!

  7. Oh, my dear friend...I have no words for you, well I have plenty of words, but none fit to publish. My heart breaks for you to have this disease and have no help dealing with it. I am glad you have those nurses, but when they are off, you are left completely alone, adrift. I wish I had some answers, but I don't. I'm afraid things will have to completely break down before they can be rebuilt the right way. Take care of yourself the best you can. Know you have plenty of friends praying for you and sending their love to you. Hang in there, my dear friend.

    1. I am sitting on it over the weekend and shall decide what to do in the coming week. Knowing I'm not the only one doesn't make it any easier though.

  8. This is so troubling to hear Deb! How very unprofessional. I do hope you will be seeing a health care professional soon as it sounds unacceptable for the good of your health! Take care. Sending hopeful thoughts for resolution soon.

    1. It is dreadful. Millions have paid into the NHS {money is deducted from the weekly paycheck, so it's not completely free} with contributions trusting they would be cared for when needed. Now people need it, it isn't there for them.
