October Days

Hello Friends!

In other news, I keep a large 500ml refillable pump of 70% alcohol hand sanitising gel on the small telephone stand in the hall.  It's a practice I established when I was caring for my mother.  It's centrally located in my cottage, and makes it conveniently quicker and easier to splodge out a blob if someone comes to the door than it is to wrestle with the fiddlier pocket size ones.  So, I gave this important corner a little seasonal makeover with some of my many pinecones..

I treated myself to two new, Autumn fragrance, Yankee Candles.  I love the warm and comforting gentle glow of candle light, and they have a good throw of fragrance that's just right for my living room.  This one is Autumn Glow, full of a soft, seasonal warmth of patchouli, which I love.  It is a rich, deep plum colour, which I favour, and in the dark evening it glows like light shining through a glass of good Bordeaux wine.

I have several Mary Engelbreit books, and haven't forgotten I promised to share my Autumn and seasonal books too!  Another day!

Humphrey Dormouse has a big bag of swag over his shoulder.  I think he's been out foraging the fields and hedgerows for his Autumn kitchen store cupboards.

I wonder if it's full of bright, red berries, like these?

The teacup and saucer is a little charity shop find from a few years ago.  It's by Johnson Bros, made in England, and has a pattern not dissimilar to my favourite and much loved Evesham pattern from Royal Worcester porcelain, but this is by , and was just 50p. Who doesn't love a bargain?

My fat quarters for my Christmas face masks have arrived.  They are so lovely, I can't wait to work with them.  They won't all go for face masks, I love the prints too much and think a patchwork table runner for my entrance might be on the agenda too.  Aren't they just darling?

I have prewashed one set on 60 degrees, ready for mask making, the other set {identical} will make some soft furnishings..  I do wish I ordered yardage now, but then Empress Mills has recently had in some heavenly designed fabrics by Lewis and Irene which are rather delicious too.

Here's a spot of colouring I did on a heavy printed cardstock using alcohol ink pens.  I wonder if I could use it to refurbish an old tray using Mod Podge and a suitable sealer, for it perfectly fits into the base?

As I type this, Wales is facing the prospect in the coming week of a second three week long lockdown, or "Circuit Breaker" as they are calling it,. to try and stop the spread of the "You Know What" as it is now spinning out of control.  We are approaching winter, and with seasonal colds and 'flu to deal with, this step is being taken to try to reduce the "R" number in order to protect the NHS.  God bless them all!  Why, oh why don't people do as they've been asked and socially distance themselves and wear masks.?  It's such a small and simple thing to do.

It is my birthday this coming week, and it's going to be a strange one.  I can't even say it will be "just another day" because days in our world are not days as we know them at all now.  Although we speak on the phone several times a week, it is the first time in years I will not meet up with my Godmother, who I have not seen since February.  I will be indulging myself with treats at home instead.  Two days after my birthday marks the second anniversary of my mother's passing, and all the sadness this brings will be amplified because I will not be able to light a candle for her at church..  These are, indeed, difficult days but we must all pull together and make these sacrifices to help our fellow humans through this ongoing crisis.

Until next time
Stay safe and stay well
Deborah xo

  2. You have made your home very beautiful for this season, so lovely to see. My place is full of mess from non-stop painting over the past few weeks! Yankee candles are really nice, I like a candle in the evenings, too. The new materials you bought are gorgeous, great idea with Christmas masks. I hope your birthday will be a happy day, even if it is different to usual birthdays. Being alone seems to have become the new normal for so many of us. Enjoy your weekend, take care, hugs, Valerie

    1. Thank you, Valerie. You made me smile, for a few carefully composed photos can easily mask the mess that accompanies a creative mind! This is why you will not likely see a photo of my kitchen or dining nook. I agree, being alone is the new normal for so many, and while I have always preferred to be alone, or with one good and like minded companion, this pandemic has shown me what it is like to be lonely too. Thank goodness for my art to distract. Have a lovely weekend, make more of your lovely art, Deb

  3. Although I don't always comment I enjoy reading your homey and down to earth posts about your life in Wales. I hope your birthday was enjoyable despite the times we live in.💖

  5. Well, first of all, I hope you have a lovely birthday, albeit a different one. I'm glad you will make some special treats for yourself -- you deserve it. It's hard, though, having your birthday and the anniversary of your mom's passing so close together. I'll be having big cyber hugs for you all week long.

When I first saw your cup, I did think it was Evesham. I have a couple of Evesham egg cups that I never use but really love to look at! I love Johnson Bros. china -- all their designs seem to speak to me. Your sweet mouse is making me smile big and I love your pine cone corner too. Isn't Mary E. wonderful? I love her work. She's an inspiration. Those masks will be just darling and I'm glad there's enough fabric to use in your home, too. I feel so happy being here. Thanks for that this Saturday morning. Hang in for the Circuit Breaker. I think UK behaves better than the US.

    1. Thank you, Jeanie. I won't pretend it will be easy this week, so all cyber hugs appreciated.

I have a pair of Evesham ramekins. I love Mary E. too, and as with my Susan Branch books, I have quite a collection that I've found on the secondary book market. They all come from America, as almost impossible to find in the UK.

  6. What a lovely blog post, Debs! I love that cup and saucer! I think the loveliest china comes from England! Also, your fat quarters! So pretty and seasonal! Wishing you an early happy birthday! The coloring you have done? Yes, I think it would be very nice to treat that tray with it! Circuit Breaker! We need one of those here! The numbers just keep increasing, and not in a good way!

    1. Thank you, Nellie. Pretty, seasonal things are what I'm focusing to try to keep my spirits up at this strange and odd time in which we find ourselves now.

  7. It is fun to see your decorations for Autumn. Taking a little time to decorate for the seasons and holidays bring such joy. Some years I don't take that time, but this year I bought some small pumpkins at our Farmers' Market and a lovely chrysanthemum---purple flowers with chartreuse centers, to put next to the pumpkins. Then I remembered I have two ceramic pumpkins that hold candles and a cute black 'bobble head' owl to go with them. I put them on our front porch, but I will bring one in (it's small) and put a candle in to have on our dinner table. I realized a few years ago how nice it is to light a candle or two in the evenings. My husband and I have birthdays in October too. I like knowing we share such a nice month for birthdays with YOU ! I wish you a happy birthday and sweet time of loving memories of your Mother. I enjoy hearing about your parents in your posts.

    1. Thank you, Marilyn. I enjoy decorating for Autumn, it lifts the mood as the long days shorten and light fades. Your ornaments sound charming, and I confess to chrysanthemum envy. It sounds an amazing colour combination, very striking. Shall we say October babies are the best? There seem to be a few of us around. Happy Birthday to you and your husband.

  8. Deb, your home is looking so lovely with the pretty pine cone display with the sweet acorns and teasel. I love bringing in pinecones. I picked up a large bucket of them yesterday. My gloved hands had to be careful with the resin that was covering them. Seeing your ME Autumn book and beautiful teacup and saucer with Humphrey made me smile. I've never met a Johnson Bros. pattern I didn't like. What a great bargain!
A Circuit Breaker sounds like something we need, but sadly would never happen here. You are so right --It's such a simple thing to wear a mask and practice social distancing. I don't really like the way I feel about my fellow man these days. Take care of yourself and know that I am sending big hugs to you especially during the coming days, my friend. xoxo

    1. Thank you, Martha Ellen. Do you know I have used less than a quarter of my pinecones, despite having filled my defunct fire place with them? The resin, while present, can be tricksy indeed. I remember seeing your Johnson Bros. china, which is quite beautiful indeed.
We will know more tomorrow when our First Minister, Mark Drakeford, will address the nation. How, indeed do we come to terms with how we feel about those who care so little for their fellow man?
Stay safe and stay well, Deb xoxo

  9. All your Autumn decorations sound so adorable. Enjoy them, and your yummy sounding scented candles. Also, have fun with the new Christmasy fabrics.

Happy early birthday. I hope you can make it an enjoyable one despite the different days we're living in. Mine's in a few weeks.

I'm sorry you won't be able to light a candle in church for your Mother. I know it's not the same, but maybe you can light one in her honour at home?

    1. Thank you, Victoria. Happy Birthday in advance to you too. It's part of what we have to do now, find new ways to mark occasions that are important to us. I have a flame taken from an eternal flame of peace and hope, so will use that to honour Mum on her anniversary.
      Stay safe and well!

  11. Happy birthday for next week. You are certainly keeping busy which hopefully will lift your spirits. With some people you would need to tell them not to wear masks and go out and hug everyone. Then they would do the opposite. The virus seems ti be rife amongst student populations and on high schools where socialising is of number one importance,

  12. Wow, you much have a huge collection of pinecones if you have only used that small amount. You are a lucky girl. I do remember you have collected them for years and I am happy for you to have so many lovelies to decorate with. They do look so pretty in the way you arrange them. I know this month is such a bittersweet month for you. Loss is so very hard to overcome, if ever you do overcome it. I don't think so. It may hurt a bit less, but that pain of loss never goes away. I think lighting a candle for your beloved Mum at home is something you can do that will be a special way to remember her. It's not what you want to do, but will be a special way you will be able to honor and remember her. I absolutely love the coloring you did! It is flat out gorgeous. I think it would look great however you decide to use it. I think it would be perfect on a tray. I could ramble on, but I will just say this was another lovely post, thanks~

  13. Early Happy Birthday wishes to you, Deborah, I was glad to read that despite being unable to see you godmother you will talk and then you'll celebrate with some treats. My late mother passed away around Christmas time, so that is always a difficult holiday now, but this year more so as we will not be visiting any family or friends out of state. That said, we are making the best of the current situation and planning to get a Christmas tree, our first in years. I liked your pinecone decorations and am planning to make a small wreath from ones last over from last year's cork wreath project. Yankee candles are a bit costly, but we too have a couple of fall scents burning nightly as we watch a movie. We always enjoy this time of year and winter because it means we light the candles and our small electric fireplace! Sorry to read that lockdown may be hading your way in Wales. There has also been an upswing here in Nashua, NH.

  15. Happy Birthday to you... Happy Birthday to you... Happy Birthday dear Deb . Happy Birthday to you...... hope you have a happy day! All special occasions are a little different this year. I know you Mother will be with you, and as you and your mother were very active in your church, I'm sure one of the Reverands would be happy to light a candle in church for you until you are able to do it yourself. Thank you so much for all your posts, they bring so much joy to all of your followers during these trying times. I know you are entering another lockdown, but be happy that your government is taking this virus seriously and doing what is necessary to keep you safe. I wish ours was It has been a beautiful autumn here in western New York state. The trees that have turned are more colorful than ever. I try to go for a short drive every day to see them, and a nice days sit in a park by a lake or canal to read and breath in the fresh air. I hope you are feeling fine and know that you are cared for from afar. I'm glad you received your Christmas book from Susan Branch, It does reflect what my Christmas was like that year, even down to the grandmother. You will have to tell us what Christmas was like in your house when you were little. All my best to you. Sue from America

    1. Thank you, Sue, for your wishes and kind words. It was an odd day, but I had lots of phone calls this year instead of visits and a day out. I would love to ask a clergy to help out, but lockdown is lockdown, and they have to stay home too. I am looking forward to reading Susan's new book, soon, and may share a little about my own childhood Christmases later.
