An Early Morning Bimble About the Borders

Hello Friends!

Thank you for all your kind comments about my drawing.

Will you join me on an early morning bimble around the borders?  It hasn't been a great week, with emergency plumbing repairs, and my back has had another spasm, so I shall be hobbling about slowly and very carefully using a sturdy stick. The garden is a mess, but thankfully there are spots of delight amongst the wilderness of joy.

The grass is still damp with dew, so do wear something waterproof on your feet, unless you would like to go barefoot and wiggle your toes in the soft, dewy grass.

Let's begin outside the front door where I just adore this old slate trough.  I filled it with some soil topped with pebbles and now some terracotta pots rest on the stones.  I've let tiny things self seed in the trough too.  It looks so pretty right now!

The old fashioned pinks are full of spicy rich clove fragrance.  They are so special, for they came from a dear friend's garden, and she died suddenly last month so they are now precious indeed.  She was one of my oldest and dearest friends of many years and we shared a passion for gardening that allowed the wild things pride of place.

The Oriental poppies are finally getting some dry days and the flowers are beautiful as ever.

Yellow roses and Rambling roses are opening in profusion now

And geraniums spring up, surprising me, in many places with their eagerness to do well!  I call them the doers.  They fill in gaps, help supress some weeds with ground cover, and send up delicate blooms in a wide variety of colours, for they are promiscuous cross pollinators indeed!  The flowers seem to hover, like tiny stars, often popping up in unexpected places.

The bronze leaf fern is looking good too, and there's a native Hart's Tongue growing alongside it!  I do so enjoy ferns in a shady spot.
As so often happens, the label is lost.  Sighs.

I couldn't resist a little post edit play on this one!  I don't do it often, only resizing.  What do you think?

Until next time
Stay Safe, Stay Well

    1. Thank you, Kim. Woke up to rain, so now they're not so pretty again. Sighs.

I'm pleased to have some perennial geraniums here, they seem to flower for ages

    1. Thank you, Valerie. Unfortunately, it's all to do with arthritis so not going to get better, only managed.

  4. Sorry you are hobbling. You have my sympathies. Your garden looks beautiful and wild flowers need a place too (I have plenty here). I am delighted to have ferns growing all over the place - top of the bank there is a regular Fernery and also growing out of the drystone walls here. They are lovely. I am envious of your bronze one - looked them up and it could be Dryopteris erythorosa. Hope this helps identify it.

Left all the perennial Geraniums behind at our old home, so will have to replace them in plantings here.

    1. Thank you. I will look that fern up and see how it compares. Geraniums are very good doers.

  5. Do hope your back is better soon. Beautiful photos of the garden flowers - your garden must be looking so delightful. I love pinks and the scent they produce and geraniums are so useful for filling gaps. I only have one oriental poppy - a white one but I am lucky if the buds open as often they rot away from rain!! Love the edited fern photo - looks an unusual variety. Stay safe and well.

    1. Thank you, I think it's arthritis so unpredictable. Garden has lots of green with pockets of colour. Many poppy buds probably going to rot now as the rain fell steadily, and unexpectedly, all day.

  6. I do hope you feel better soon. Nothing more terrible than being down in the summer with the sun shining. I have a yellow rose bush like that and it has the most wonderful lemon scent.

    1. Thank you. This yellow rose has little scent, but is made up for by other flowers.

  7. Drat to those household issues and a troubling back and hope that the first is resolved and that the back is feeling better. The poppies are lovely and geraniums are such hardy plants and I always enjoyed planting them in flower pots in our front yard in days past.

    1. Thank you. I am trying to cut back on pots, too much watering!

  8. Deb, it is always joyous to visit your garden as she shines with beauty. I must admit I am quite partial to poppies and yours are fabulous! Take care of your back, dear one. Gardening reminds my joints to take it easy-(she says as an ice pack is resting on her spine). I love ferns and I must say what a wonderful golden specimen you have there! Feel better and enjoy these June days. xoxo

  9. Just popping by to say thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. The photos of your garden are lovely and the poppies are beautiful. We have lots of different hardy geraniums and you are right they do add both colour and cover. Lovely to have the special pinks too:)

  10. I'm so sorry about your friend, Deb. I'm glad you have those beautiful flowers to remember her with each spring as they bloom. Everything is looking very good here.

I hope the hobble ends soon and you are back with both feet all the way. Not at all fun!

    1. Thank you, Jeanie, yes it was a shock, and restrictions meant I could not attend her funeral either.
Rest is really all that helps my back and hip so need to learn to live with it.

  11. Such loveliness in your garden! The pinks remind me of my grandmother’s garden. I’ve tried for some here, though haven’t had any luck. Take care of yourself! Special hugs to you at the loss of your friend.

    1. Thank you, Nellie. Pinks like being ignored, poor soil, and dry conditions. Do keep trying!

  12. I hope by now your back has eased up enough that you're no longer hobbling.

I love yellow roses. In fact, roses are one of my favourite flowery scents in general (along with lavender and jasmine).

  13. You have lots of lovely flowers. I really like scented pinks. I think scent is an integral part of the garden. I hope that your back is better soon.

    1. Thank you. I sometimes find that between the pinks, the rugosa, and next door's cordyline palm that my garden is overwhelmingly scented.
