A Brace Is Needed

Hello Friends

Today, with winds in excess of 40mph, and an injured wrist, and Welsh Water to deal with, I just could not manage my walk.  With the weather taking a downward turn, contingency plans are being made.

The wind blew hard all last evening and through the night.  Much banging and clattering was heard, and it was confirmed this morning with the way pots and other garden bits and bobs were strewn across the patio. This is what I've been worried about. When it is blowing like that, it is simply dangerous for me to step outside the door as my balance is awful and I cannot risk falling.

Last year, I injured my left wrist which took months and months to heal.  When I began walking, I anticipated sore legs and painful feet, but no, these haven't happened, but what I did not see coming was this:

I noticed a few days ago that pushing the rollator was aggravating it. Funny how I anticipated sore legs and feet but did not anticipate the effect it's having on my neck and shoulders! I should have realised, the rollator weighs about 20lbs, so it's added weight to push along, or hold back with brakes firmly held when going down a slope.  Strain was inevitable. Hopefully the brace will strengthen my wrist and keep it in order!

Then there was the whole issue with Welsh Water.  It's a very long story, I won't bore you with finer details, suffice to say it was not a good, stress-free start to the day to discover them parked on the road right across the bottom of my drive {and only access} digging up the pavement!  Two other houses have access over my drive, so three of us had access blocked, and I discovered my water turned off and not a word of warning to be prepared!  Fortunately, I'd had my shower and filled the kettle before they started, but other things had to wait.

The size of the repair does not give a fair representation of the size of the blocked area of pavement when covered with tools and workmen, not to mention the van parked on the road.

Then I looked at the forecast for the coming days and it does not bode well.

Tomorrow {Thursday} we might have thunderstorms.

Friday doesn't look too bad, but thereafter the days are an odd assortment of varying types of rain from drizzle to heavy.  I will have to plan carefully and try to dodge in and out between showers.  I no longer sport the range of useful waterproof trousers, gaiters, boots and jackets I once almost lived in.

I am making contingency plans, just in cases, so that I won't drop my fitness levels I've regained.  Hopefully I won't need them, but as I say, just in cases!

The fundraising coordinator for Wales has been in touch.  Some people are having difficulty getting my link to work so she is sending me a personalised QR code which should resolve the problems.  I will send it on to those who have told me they had problems donating.  Thank you all so very much!

Diolch o Galon!

Until next time

  1. Hello Deb, I'm catching up, so going to answer these backwards...oops.

I sure do hope that your water issue is now fixed and it cost you nothing but aggravation. Hopefully they are done with you now. We are in a rainy patch also and it is causing me aggravation with my yard duties, the grass is growing so fast. But it definitely would not be good for you to be out in it. A slip risk for sure. I'm so sorry that you are having wrist and shoulder and neck pain. I know you have been doing much good with all your walking and I hope the pain resolves soon. I am so thrilled to hear how much money you have raised so far, spectacular!

    1. I don't know what is happening with the water, it's a case of their left hand doesn't know what their right hand is doing. I'm afraid it is an ongoing issue and watch this space!

  2. Maybe the enforced rest will help recovery from that strain. Wrists take forever to get back, judging by my friend who broke bothhers last year. She does weightlifting with a personal trainer - I can't work out how that would be a good idea but she's sure...
Perhaps you can substitute and indoor work out for the walks in really bad weather? If it's effort it's exercise

    1. A few days in the brace and not overdoing the tight hold on the rollator seems to have nipped it in the bud!
Yes, I'm doing indoor walking on the spot etc. I did manage a short hop yesterday. I will be doing a blog that covers a couple of days to share it.

  3. At least the hole was dug and filled in over the space of a day, but what inconvenience and not even letting you know this was going to happen is very poor planning.

Have you got any Ibuprofen cream to rub into your strained wrist? I have found this helpful in the past. The weather is a proper spanner in the works, but I know you will make up for the days it wasn't possible to walk. There's meant to be a hot spell on the way too, or if you read the Express, 10 feet of snow!!!

    1. Ha! They are coming back, apparently. It's no joke. My ire shared on Facebook has brought others, also spitting fire, out of the woodwork!
I have to be careful with things that contain NSAIDS, especially Nurofen.

  4. I am so sorry to hear about your wrist and I hope it improves soon. Sorry also about Welsh Water - it is dreadful that you didn't have advance warning of your water supply being cut off and I hope the problem is solved now. The weather forecast doesn't look good but I am sure you will make up for days you find you cannot walk. Well done on all the money you have raised.

    1. The Welsh Water saga is continuing . . .
Can't go out yet, missing the best part of the day as there is a Cook delivery due and I must be at home for it.

  5. I never would have thought of the rollator as an issue for your wrist when walking but it makes perfect sense. I hope the brace helps and it heals soon.

    1. I suppose it's a form of RSI, and the site is already injured. The brace is helping.
