Hello Friends
In stating the obvious, I have not been here in a while. The reason is this: despite having comment moderation in place, I am having regular issues with spammers. Comment moderation does not deter them, and I announced on my Twitter feed that I intend to delete this blog, as it seemed the only way forward. However, several request not to do so resulted in Ragged Robin kindly suggesting to me that instead of deleting, why don't I just make the blog "private". I didn't know you could do this, so in a few days this blog will be made "private". At the moment I am not entirely sure what this means, or entails, but I hope you will bear with me while I work this all out!
I may start shorter, daily posts rather than the time consuming longer ones I usually do too.
What is it they say? See you on the flip side! I hope you'll still be there.
Until next time
Deborah xoxo
Hi, Deb, if you make it private no one will be able to see your blog unless you add them. How about just turning off comments? Or another way would be to not allow anonymous commenters. Then at least some can comment, but most spammers won't. Please don't delete your blog or go private. That would be sad.
ReplyDeleteThis weekend I am making it private. It might not be forever, but I have to find a way to deter the sudden spate of spammers.
DeleteI set my blog up so that comments on posts older than 5 days needed moderating as my spammers tend to crop up on older posts. I then delete them en masses unless I spot one in the moderation list that is a true visitor.
DeleteSo sorry about all the nasty comments you have had - most of mine are just "spam" but I have had a couple of really horrible ones so can appreciate just a little how awful it has been for you.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck with making it private - I think you can let people you trust subscribe so I hope you can set up this option. I would certainly love to subscribe and will wait to hear what you have set up.
Thanks, it might not be forever, but the last few weeks have just pushed me.
DeleteWhat a shame about the persistent spammers. I have never worked out how to apply to read blogs that go private. It means asking to read and I have no idea how to do that.
ReplyDeleteAs you already follow I think you are okay for reading.
DeleteHow do we follow?
ReplyDeleteOn the page there should be a link under 'Kindred Spirits' Should work!
DeleteI'm glad I'll still see you on FB too, but this is probably a good idea if it's really bugging you. Most of my spam is spam -- not mean or anything, just stuff that never gets published. I already follow you -- do I have to refollow? I'll definitely subscribe if I can. (And as Kim said, you can also just turn off comments, which several bloggers I know do.)
ReplyDeleteI don't think you have to do anything as you already follow. I've had enough of dealing with them for now. Maybe I will make it public again one day, once I have shaken them off!
DeleteI'm so sorry for the negative comments your lovely blog has been getting. I would love to be able to continue to read your posts. How does one request access once you've gone private? Hugs to you, my sweet friend.
ReplyDeleteSpammers have found my blog too, so I put comment moderation on and enjoy deleting them each morning!
ReplyDeleteI have done the ‘private blog’ thing in the past and unless you send a personal invite to the email address of everyone you want to be able to see the blog, there is unlikely to be any way of contacting you to ask for admission. Hope you can sort things out to your satisfaction, it would be a shame to let the spammers “win” by you having to shut yourself away.
Good luck
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what becoming private will entail but I would very much like to continue reading your blog - especially in these times when all pleasant diversions are welcome. Many thanks.
